FUCHISA rosea
- Age
- 27th March 2005 put into pot. Purchased Nov 2002
- Secone one planted 5th November 2006. Cuttings from older one put into pots same day.
- Where it's Growing
- Completely sheltered site with no sun under Southern side of house.
- Upkeep
- We have moved the older plant 4 times. Only now does it seem to be growing well. We 'had' to put it into a pot as it was too dry and too sunny and too sandy of a soil.
Then it was getting attacked by mealy bugs in the fernery, as there musn't have been enough air flow. It still needs alot of water, sprayed with garlic and pyrethrum spray
regularly and charlies carp and worm juice regularly. Tricky plant!
- Growth Patterns
- The older one is only now growing nice healthy big leaves and new shoots.......YAY..!!
- Flowers at late Spring to Christmas time.
- The great majority are native to South America, but with a few occurring north through Central America to Mexico, and also several on New Zealand and Tahiti.
The majority are tropical or subtropical.
- Future Notes
- I have always loved this plant since having a big specimen bigger than me in a home I lived in Wentworth Falls in the Upper Blue Mountains.
- I gave the older plant some liquid fertilisers today. So I hope it doesn't go into shock! (26.9.06)
- The older plant is 'already' flowering and powering along, even though its season is more Christmas time. It must have loved the fertilisers and the cooler position it's in this Spring. (31/10/06)
- 13.8.07- All these plants are doing very well. 2 under the green roof are thriving with new growth.
The oldest one in the Southern garden I cut right back in mid winter and it is now covered in bushy new growth. The second one in a big pot is now 'huge'.
- 01.01.08 - These plants were growing beautifully, with many flowers opening when a severe hail storm hit at the beginning of December.
The storm tore strips off these delicate plants and I was forced to cut them right back to their stems. I recently gave them all plenty of fertilisers &
they now all have fresh new growth, slowly.
