BIRDS NEST FERNS asplenium australasicum
- Age
- 11th April 2005 in fernery
- 0ctober 2004 under Southern side of house, then put back into large pots 2/11/06. First purchased Dec 2001.
- One in small basket on plank of wood with a horse shoe put on fernery wall 18/7/07. Purchased Lismore car boot market 15/7/07.
- Where it's Growing
- Full shade. Damp spots on the Southern side of the house and fernery wall. No sun at all.
- Upkeep
- Constant watering, and still they don't do very well. I think our soil is too well draining. Maybe they do need a bit more sun,
but we have had them in a more sunny position and they nearly died as it was too dry and hot. They need alot of work to keep healthy.
- Growth Patterns
- Very slow growing. We have not had new shoots on ours for half a year or more. They are prone to many problems. Leaf rott, too dry, white mealy bugs and the list goes on.
- They also seem to almost die off in winter.
- Future Notes
- I put the two large old ones under the Sthn side of house, back into big pots today 2/11/06. They were surely going to die this summer if we had left them the way they were.
They were originally in pots and were doing well. so hopefully they come back now.
- (15/1/07)Both the newly potted ferns are thriving now and full of new fronds!
